What this does
Takes a photo of a paper receipt and reads the important parts off it: the merchant, the date, the total, and the tax.
Useful for expenses, where the alternative is a shoebox and an unpleasant evening.
How to use it
- Take a photo of the receipt, or upload one you already have.
- Wait a moment while it is read.
- Check the figures. Always check the total.
- Correct anything wrong, then save or export.
Getting a good read
The photo matters more than anything else.
- Flatten the receipt. Creases and curl are the usual culprits.
- Good even light, and no shadow from your own hand.
- Get the whole receipt in frame, square on rather than at an angle.
- Faded thermal paper is genuinely hard to read. Photograph those sooner rather than later.
Your privacy
Your photo is sent to be read and the extracted details are returned to you. The image is not kept afterwards. Receipts can show a partial card number, so treat the photos on your own phone with the same care.
Common questions
How accurate is it?
Good on a clear, flat receipt. Less good on crumpled or faded ones, which is why you should always check the total before filing it.
What if it reads something wrong?
Edit the field before saving. Correcting one number is still far faster than typing all of them.
Can it do several at once?
Photograph them one at a time. A single photo of a pile confuses it.
